Cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells (neoplasm) that develop because of damage to our pets’ DNA. This complex process can be triggered by hereditary, environmental, and/or nutritional factors. While cancer is more common in dogs than cats, incident reports increase with an animal’s age.
While the exact cause of cancer is unknown, prevention is difficult. Some forms of cancer are frequently treatable and early detection is crucial in determining the best course of treatment for your pet. For this reason and others, it is extremely important for your pet to maintain regular annual check-ups.
There are different types of neoplasias, some are benign and localized while others are malignant and invasive. A strong evidence of cancer can be attained from physical exams, X-rays, blood tests, and diagnostic sonography, however a biopsy (tissue removal) might be required to determine the level of severity.
There are various types of treatment therapies available depending on the type of cancer diagnosed. While surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are some of the better-known therapies; other methods like cryosurgery, hyperthermia and immunotherapy have their benefits as well.
Below is a list of common signs of cancer in your pet. If you notice anything unusual in your pet’s habits or if your pet exhibits any of the signs listed below, contact our veterinary staff immediately.
